When should wisdom teeth be removed?

Wisdom teeth should be removed if they are impacted ( not erupted completely in the mouth). Impacted wisdom teeth are difficult to clean, bacteria collect in the crevice between the teeth and can lead to gum disease and decay of the wisdom tooth and the molar tooth in front of it.

Is the procedure of removal painful? How long will it take to recover?

Local anesthesia is given to the patients prior to the removal .The procedure involves removal of bone, therefore swelling will be present in the region for a few days. The patient is put on anti-inflammatory medication for a few days to reduce the discomfort. The recovery period will depend on the complexity of the procedure and can range from 4-14 days normally.
