Let your face be the mirror of your soul says a popular song. Our sense of self and individuality starts with our face. Nothing in the spectrum of human injury, disease or disfigurement compares to the trauma of losing a part of your face. The main causes for this are cancer or accidents. Some people may also have congenitally missing (missing at birth) structures.

Maxillofacial prosthetics deals with the treatment of patients who have defects on the face e.g., eyes, ears and nose or replacement of parts of the upper and lower jaw. These defects can be treated by plastic surgery or replacement, done by a prosthodontist using silicone and acrylic for facial defects and acrylic for defects inside the mouth.
